Jimmy Fallon recently tweeted that he loves “when people tell me about their one summer job stories.” Well, we have many of those for you, but first a little background on what could be considered the “golden age” of American summer jobs!
Started in the early 1900s, the American tradition of giving teenagers summer employment to make up for lost classroom time during the school year was originally based around farming and agricultural industries. It eventually spread to other sectors such as retail and hospitality as well, making this a truly universal experience. It is interesting how this custom has lasted so long even with more than 90% of US teens now being enrolled in high school or secondary education programs.
