With so much information out there, it’s really not that hard to find a way to think creatively. Here are ten ideas to help you solve problems by thinking beyond the obvious.
1. Deviate from your usual routine.
Change up your daily routine to stimulate creativity. For example, try to do something different at night: take a brisk walk instead of watching TV; listen to soothing music instead of noisy music for a few hours, or engage in a fun activity with friends. An active brain is productive and creative, so try to make it more active.
2. Make your surroundings more appealing.
Envision how you would improve your workspace or home office. Choose a new desk for your home office or maybe a new chair to make yourself more comfortable. Changing up your environment will help you feel more prepared for work and be more ready to come up with fresh ideas. You may even find that the change inspires some creativity within yourself.
3. Learn from those who think differently than you.
More often than not, when people are trying to solve a problem, they go with the first solution that comes to mind. However, being too quick to solve something can sometimes close your mind to other possible solutions and prevent you from thinking creatively. By learning from other people’s perspectives, you can tap into a wealth of creative information and find innovative solutions more quickly.
4. Look at tangible objects.
This is a great way to clear your mind from an overload of information and make room for new ideas. If you are having trouble coming up with an idea for your story, for example, step away from the computer and put the focus back on storytelling by writing down keywords or phrases on a blank sheet of paper. Then, come back to the computer and really use those words to push yourself into a new perspective. It may help to look at different physical objects that have nothing to do with what you are trying to solve.
