SIREN — Sen. Joe Manchin basically ended any prospect that significant climate-related elements would be included in the Democrats' reconciliation plan late Thursday night. According to Tony Romm and Jeff Stein of the Washington Post, the West Virginian told party leaders that "he would not support an economic package that contains new spending contain additional taxes aimed at companies or the wealthiest Americans or discuss climate change. This constitutes a severe defeat for party MPs who had planned to achieve an important portion of their agenda before the upcoming midterm elections.
The rest of what he claimed was that "Manchin told Democratic leaders he was open to modifying federal legislation that would cut the cost of prescription medications for seniors." Additionally, the moderate from West Virginia said that she was in favor of "longer subsidies that would help keep health insurance rates down for millions of Americans for the next two years."
The West Virginia Democrat's move virtually eliminated action on issues other than prescription drug prices and healthcare subsidies, according to the New York Times.
According to Jeff Stein of the WaPo, "it's worth reiterating just how much has unraveled [of a potential reconciliation pact] since this all began: The Child Tax Credit, universal pre-kindergarten, child care, public housing, paid family leaves, senior dental and vision care, free community college, climate policies, and a ton of other things I can't even remember right now.
According to POLITICO, his decision leaves Democrats, who had long hoped for much more comprehensive legislation, with little choice except to pass a small health-care-focused plan. Progressives were very frustrated by it, especially those who regarded the Democrats' control of Congress and the White House as a long-overdue chance to reduce carbon emissions.
Every young person, every activist, and the majority of Americans who support climate action must understand unequivocally that this is not the Democratic Party, said Rep.Jared Huffman (D-Calif.). Joe Manchin is the individual in question. This guy is a wrecking ball when it comes to the most significant existential problem of our time.
One thing that might energize Democrats is "Bidenworld, fellow Democrats, dreaming of a Trump pre-midterm announcement." the author, Christopher Cadelago.
Another potential grenade for the Republican Party is "Republican worries of an abortion backlash rise," by David Siders, Adam Wren, and Megan Messerly. Republicans were aware that they had a political issue as soon as Roe v. Wade was overruled, especially with suburban moderates who needed to support GOP candidates in the midterm elections. The example of a 10-year-old rape victim traveling across state borders from Ohio to Indiana for an abortion demonstrates how harmful the problem may be.
